Lake Hartwell is one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the southeast. It comprises over 50,000 acres of water and nearly 1000 miles of shoreline in Georgia and South Carolina.
Hartwell lake resides on the state line between Georgia and South Carolina, and there are several charming small towns in each state. Because the lake is so large, it can be quite the drive between lake towns, so it helps to get a lay of the land.

Georgia side of Lake Hartwell
On the Georgia side of Lake Hartwell, you’ll find most of the lakefront property is within Hart county and the city of Hartwell. The city of Hartwell is a only about 10 minutes from the interstate, but two other towns – Lavonia and Toccoa – are even closer to I-85. All three towns feature a charming downtown area, local farmer’s markets, several restaurants, and local shops.
South Carolina side of Lake Hartwell
You’ll find that the towns on the South Carolina side of Lake Hartwell are just as charming as those on the Georgia side of the lake. If you’re willing to drive an hour or more from the lake, there are lots of great places to visit for day trips from Lake Hartwell.
